So why don't patients with hypothyroidism simply eat more selenium-containing foods or take selenium supplements? These avenues are not feasible for two reasons. First, selenium can be toxic if ingested in excess. Although it is an essential nutrient, the body's excretion rate of excess selenium is relatively low because evolutionarily speaking, selenium is a rather rare nutrient. This allows selenium to build up and cause damage to the gut and other tissues because the body cannot store it as easily. Second, while this is true at least some of the time, selenium supplementation may not always result in higher glutathione peroxidase activity4.
The effect of selenium supplementation on glutathione peroxidase activity appears to be related to serum iodine levels. Excess iodine seems to counteract the effects of selenium. Clinically, this would lead to unpredictable results, with the daily efficacy of supplements varying widely with what a patient consumes. The mechanisms responsible for these interactions are unknown, as are the effects of selenium supplementation on thyroid health.
Therefore, direct glutathione supplementation may be a more attractive option.
How does glutathione support thyroid health?
Supplementation with glutathione can support thyroid health by reducing the need for selenium and providing thyroid cells with the oxidative stress regulation tools they naturally use. Glutathione aids in the recycling of glutathione peroxidase, removing toxic products trapped by the enzyme. This means that thyroid cells do not need to produce extra glutathione peroxidase to cope with oxidative stress.
Furthermore, glutathione directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species independently of the antioxidant activity of glutathione peroxidase. Therefore, the use of glutathione supplementation will alter the threat model of thyroid problems from selenium deficiency or excessive oxidative stress.
